Concrete Slab Thickness & Estimating Mistakes

The right thickness for patios, driveways, and shed floors — plus the six estimating mistakes that cause short pours, blown budgets, and cracked slabs.

Most residential slabs are poured 4 inches thick for patios, walkways, and shed floors, and 5 to 6 inches where vehicles park or drive. Thickness matters more than any other number in a concrete estimate: going from 4 to 5 inches adds 25% more concrete. The most common estimating mistakes are confusing cubic feet with cubic yards, forgetting to convert inches to feet, ignoring waste, and under-measuring a subgrade that was dug too deep.

How thick should the slab be?

Thickness is a structural decision, not a guess. The common residential standards:

Heavy vehicles / equipment 6 in and up

Four inches is the workhorse. Step up to five or six anywhere a vehicle sits, and always defer to local building code and your soil conditions, which can push the minimum higher. Reinforcement (rebar or mesh) and a compacted gravel base matter too, but they don’t change the concrete volume you order — thickness does.

Why thickness dominates the estimate

Because volume scales directly with depth, a small bump in thickness is a big bump in concrete. Take a 10 × 10 ft slab:

Going 4 → 5 inches adds 25%; 4 → 6 inches adds 50%. That’s why guessing “eh, make it a little thicker” quietly wrecks a budget — and why an over-dug subgrade that leaves your 4-inch slab actually 5 inches deep in spots costs real money.

The six estimating mistakes

1. Confusing cubic feet with cubic yards. The classic. Concrete is sold by the cubic yard, but the raw formula gives cubic feet. Forget to divide by 27 and you’ll order 27× too much. Remember: cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27.

2. Not converting inches to feet. A 4-inch slab is 0.333 ft thick, not 4. Plug 4 into the formula and you overstate the pour twelvefold. Every dimension in the volume formula must be in feet.

3. Skipping the waste margin. Spillage, forms that bow, and subgrade dug a little deep all consume extra concrete. Add about 10% for a normal pour, 15% for rough or hand-dug ground. Ordering the exact theoretical volume is how pours come up short.

4. Measuring the form, not the ground. Your form sets the top of the slab, but the bottom rides on the subgrade. If the base is uneven or over-excavated, the real volume exceeds the tidy rectangle you measured. Check depth in several spots.

5. Under-ordering to “save money.” Running short mid-pour is the worst outcome in concrete. The fresh batch bonds poorly to the concrete that’s already setting, creating a cold joint — a built-in crack and weak line. A little leftover is cheap insurance; a cold joint is a permanent defect.

Why did my concrete order come up short?
Almost always one of three reasons — the inches-to-feet conversion was skipped, cubic feet were mistaken for cubic yards, or no waste margin was added while the subgrade was over-dug.
