How Much Drywall Do I Need?
A clear, accurate method for estimating how many sheets of drywall to buy for any room — with the exact formula, a worked example, and a sheet-count reference table.
To find how much drywall you need, add up your wall and ceiling area with 2 × (length + width) × wall height (plus length × width for the ceiling), add about 10% for waste, then divide by the sheet size — 32 sq ft for a 4×8 sheet or 48 sq ft for a 4×12. A 12 × 14 ft room with 8 ft walls and a ceiling works out to roughly 642 sq ft, or 21 sheets of 4×8 drywall.
Drywall is cheap by the sheet and expensive by the mistake. Come up short and you’re back at the store, matching batches and dragging 50-pound sheets up the stairs again; buy way too much and you’ve paid to store panels that bow against the garage wall. Every drywall estimate comes down to one idea: find your area, pad it for waste, and divide by the size of one sheet. Everything else — compound, tape, screws — scales off that same area.
Step 1: Measure the area you’re covering
Drywall covers walls, ceilings, or both. For a whole room, add the length and width, double that for the perimeter, and multiply by the wall height:
Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × wall height Ceiling area = length × width (add this only if you’re boarding the ceiling)
Take a 12 ft × 14 ft room with 8 ft ceilings. The walls are 2 × (12 + 14) × 8 = 416 sq ft. Boarding the ceiling too? Add 12 × 14 = 168 sq ft, for 584 sq ft of gross area. Hanging a single wall instead of a whole room? Just use wall length × wall height and skip the perimeter math.
Step 2: Add a waste factor
You never install every square foot you buy. Cutouts around windows, doors, and outlets leave offcuts too small to reuse, tapered edges get trimmed, and the occasional sheet cracks on a corner. A 10% allowance is the standard cushion:
584 × 1.10 = 642.4 sq ft
Notice we don’t subtract doors and windows here. On most jobs those openings are treated as part of the waste allowance — you hang the board over the opening and cut it out afterward, which is faster and leaves cleaner edges. The calculator only deducts openings if you explicitly ask it to.
Step 3: Divide by the sheet size
A sheet’s coverage is simply its dimensions multiplied together. The two everyday sizes are:
- 4×8 sheet = 32 sq ft
- 4×12 sheet = 48 sq ft
Divide your padded area by whichever you’re buying, then round up to a whole sheet:
Sheets = ⌈ area ÷ sheet size ⌉

Worked example: a 12 × 14 bedroom
Putting all three steps together for a standard bedroom with an 8 ft ceiling, walls and lid boarded, using 4×8 sheets:

Skip the ceiling and each room drops by roughly its length × width in area — often four to six sheets for an average bedroom.
Don’t stop at the sheets

Where estimates go wrong
The most common miss is forgetting the ceiling — it’s easy to price out the walls and overlook that the lid can add a third again to your sheet count. The next is skipping the waste factor entirely and buying the bare minimum, which almost guarantees a second trip.
