Topsoil is the screened upper layer of natural earth — the general-purpose base you spread for lawns and beds. Garden soil is topsoil pre-blended with compost and nutrients for planting. Compost is decomposed organic matter, a rich amendment you mix in rather than use alone. They are not interchangeable. Buy compost where you needed topsoil and you will watch your bed sink and dry out; buy topsoil where the plants wanted compost and growth stalls. Topsoil: the base layer

Topsoil is the dark, fertile upper layer of natural ground — typically the top several inches of earth, screened to remove rocks, roots, and debris. It carries some organic matter but is mostly mineral soil, which is what gives it structure and staying power.

Think of topsoil as your volume and foundation. It is what you spread to build a new lawn, cap graded fill, or bulk out a raised bed. It holds its shape, drains predictably, and does not decompose away over a season. Because it is mostly mineral, screened topsoil is the densest of the three at about 1.10 tons per cubic yard (heavier when moist).

Do not confuse topsoil with fill dirt, which is the subsoil below it — cheap, dense, low in organic matter, and meant for grading and leveling, not for growing.

Compost: the amendment

Compost is fully decomposed organic matter — broken-down leaves, plant trimmings, and manures. It is alive with microbes and packed with nutrients, but it is not a standalone growing medium. Used alone it drains too quickly, holds too much nitrogen for many seedlings, and — because it is still slowly breaking down — it shrinks noticeably over a season, leaving your bed low.

Compost’s job is to enrich. Mixed into topsoil at roughly 30–40% by volume, it boosts fertility, feeds soil life, and improves moisture retention without the drawbacks of using it neat. Being airy and organic, compost is the lightest of the three at about 1.00 ton per cubic yard.

Garden soil: the pre-made blend

Garden soil is essentially topsoil that has already been blended with compost and often a starter charge of nutrients — the mixing done for you. Bagged “garden soil” or “raised bed mix” is aimed squarely at planting beds and containers.

The trade-off is convenience versus control and cost. Garden soil saves you the work of blending and gets a bed planting-ready out of the bag, but you pay a premium and give up control over the exact ratio. For a large bed, buying topsoil and compost separately and mixing your own is usually cheaper and lets you dial in the blend.

How to blend them for a raised bed

For most vegetable raised beds, a reliable recipe is about 60% topsoil to 40% compost. The topsoil supplies volume and structure; the compost supplies fertility and moisture-holding. That balance gives you a bed that is rich but still drains and holds its level.

Here is where the weight difference matters when you order. Suppose a bed needs 2 cubic yards of finished mix. At 60/40 that is 1.2 cubic yards of topsoil (about 1.2 × 1.10 ≈ 1.32 tons) plus 0.8 cubic yards of compost (about 0.8 × 1.00 ≈ 0.80 tons). If your supplier quotes by the ton, using compost’s lighter density for the whole load — or topsoil’s heavier one — would misprice the order. Which one do you actually need?

  • Filling a new bed or lawn? Start with topsoil for the bulk, then work compost into the top layer.
  • Existing bed looking tired? You need compost, not topsoil — mix a few inches into the surface.
